Standard Eye Exam Vs. Developmental Vision Evaluation -A standard eye exam looks at eye health needs and management, checking eye sight (i.e. 6/6)and assessing the need for glasses and contact lenses. - A developmental eye exam includes testing and evaluation of visual skills (function, performance eye teaming, focus, tracking, etc.). Specialized tools and equipment are used to assess the function of vision that go beyond measuring eyesight, such as equipment that can tell if the brain is ignoring one eye or not using both eyes together to point precisely on the page when reading. In the absence of complete testing, common pediatric vision problems can go undetected, and, in some cases, can be misdiagnosed as a learning disability or behavioral problem. IMPORTANT NOTE: Many school eye or vision screenings test only 1 of the 17 visual skills kids need to succeed-- that is, Acuity-Distance (clarity of sight in the distance, 6/6eyesight as measured by the standard Snellen eye chart).
